LuDioMiX – Automatic Lighting for Live Bands

LuDioMiX is software designed for live bands. It listens to the music in real time and controls DMX lighting based on what it hears. Its purpose is to create a dynamic light show that follows the music without requiring the band to have a dedicated lighting operator.

LuDioMiX does not require pre-programmed songs or a setlist. The band can change the song order, extend a solo or play a song differently from the previous show. The lighting is created based on what is happening on stage at that moment.

Who is LuDioMiX designed for?

LuDioMiX is designed especially for gigging bands that have their own lighting equipment but no dedicated lighting operator. It is suitable for bars and clubs, private events, corporate events and other performances where the band uses its own lighting setup.

Many bands have a good lighting setup, but during a show the musicians need to focus on playing and the sound engineer needs to focus on the sound. Continuously operating the lights would effectively require another person. LuDioMiX is designed to take care of that job.

No need to program every song

LuDioMiX is built around the idea that every song should not have to be programmed in advance. You do not need to create the entire night’s setlist in the software or define beforehand what the lights should do at different points in each song.

Live performances do not always go exactly the same way. An intro may last longer, the audience may sing along, a solo may continue longer than planned or the song order may change during the show.

LuDioMiX listens to the music in real time and creates the lighting based on what the band is playing at that moment. The band does not have to play according to a pre-programmed light show.

LuDioMiX listens to the music in real time

LuDioMiX continuously analyzes the incoming audio signal and uses information from the music to control the lighting.

The software monitors things such as volume, rhythm, tempo, energy and changes between quieter and more powerful sections. Based on this information, LuDioMiX continuously decides what kind of lighting suits that particular moment.

This is more than just lights flashing to the beat. LuDioMiX aims to create a complete light show where the number of active lights, brightness, colors, movements and effects change along with the music.

LuDioMiX knows where your lights are

You tell LuDioMiX what types of lights you are using and where they are positioned on stage. Lights can be assigned, for example, to the front, middle or back of the stage and placed either on the floor or overhead.

For moving lights, you can also define important target areas such as the performers and the stage backdrop. LuDioMiX can use these targets automatically during the light show. The direction of the dance floor can also be defined for Party mode.

Once LuDioMiX knows the types and positions of the lights and the available targets for moving lights, it can use lights in different parts of the stage for different purposes instead of controlling every light in the same way.

The lighting follows the music

Not every light needs to be on all the time. During a quiet section, the lighting may use only a small part of the available lighting setup. As the music builds and becomes more powerful, the lighting can build with it.

LuDioMiX changes which lights are used, their brightness, color combinations and the behavior of moving lights according to the music. More dramatic effects can also be used during more powerful sections.

The goal is for a quiet intro, a verse and a powerful climax of a song to look different on stage – without having to program those moments into the song beforehand.

You don’t need to constantly operate the software during the show

LuDioMiX is designed for situations where there is no dedicated person operating the lights. That is why the software does not need to be continuously controlled during the show.

If the band has a sound engineer, they can select the appropriate mode in LuDioMiX and start it. After that, they can concentrate on mixing the sound while LuDioMiX takes care of the lighting.

If there is no separate sound engineer, a member of the band can start LuDioMiX before the performance begins. The idea is not for a musician to operate lighting software while playing.

Select a mode, start LuDioMiX and focus on the show.

The right mode for different situations

Not every part of the night needs the same kind of lighting. A quiet performance, an energetic live show, a dance floor and a band break all call for different lighting.

LuDioMiX has different operating modes for these situations. The user simply selects the mode that suits the situation instead of adjusting a large number of individual settings during the event.

In Live modes, LuDioMiX follows the music and builds the lighting around it. A more restrained light show can be used for quieter performances, Party mode can direct more of the lighting toward the dance floor, and the stage can remain softly lit during breaks.

Your lighting setup can change from venue to venue

Venues and stages are different. At one venue, moving lights may be mounted high at the back of the stage, while at another, some of the lights may be placed on the floor or in different positions around the stage.

When the positions of the lights change, you simply tell LuDioMiX their new locations and, if necessary, aim the moving lights again. You do not need to rebuild the entire light show.

This means the same lighting equipment can be used on different stages without having to program the light show again.

Use your own lights

LuDioMiX is designed to work with standard DMX-controlled lights. You do not need to buy an entirely new lighting setup just to use LuDioMiX.

When a light is added to LuDioMiX for the first time, you tell the software what features the fixture has. LuDioMiX can then automatically use features such as brightness, colors and movement.

You do not need to create every color combination, movement and lighting situation yourself. Once your lights have been set up, LuDioMiX takes care of the actual light show.

What do you need to use LuDioMiX?

LuDioMiX currently runs as software on a computer. It does not require a separate LuDioMiX hardware unit – the software is simply installed on the computer you use at the gig.

To control the lights, you need a connection between the computer and your DMX lighting. This can be done, for example, with an Art-Net interface connected to the computer via a network connection. The interface converts the control data sent by LuDioMiX into a standard DMX signal for the lights.

For live band use, LuDioMiX also needs an audio signal connected to the computer. The signal can come from the mixer into the computer’s audio input or through a separate audio interface. LuDioMiX listens to this signal and uses it to control the light show.

If the music is being played on the same computer and there is no separate live audio signal, LuDioMiX can analyze the audio being played on the computer directly. In that case, a separate audio input is not required.

At its simplest, you need a computer, LuDioMiX software, DMX lights and a way to connect the lights to the computer. For live band use, you also need an audio signal connected to the computer.

Built for live shows

LuDioMiX is designed to require as little attention as possible during a show. Songs do not need to be programmed in advance, and the light show does not need to be continuously controlled by hand.

The song order can change, an intro can run longer or the band can play a song differently from the previous show. LuDioMiX listens to what is happening right now and adapts the lighting to the music.

The idea behind LuDioMiX is simple: set up your lights, start the software and focus on playing.
